LinkedIn is a social network that is aimed at the business community and is used for professional networking so it’s not so much advertising your business as helping to get you in touch with people who can help you to take your business further.
LinkedIn state that they have over 90 million members in over 200 countries and territories and that 50% of their members are outside the United States of America. LinkedIn is available in several European languages and has its European Headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.
Features
LinkedIn allows users to connect with people they know and creates a list of contact details which are called connections. Users can ask anyone to be a ‘connection’ even if they are not a member of LinkedIn.
Connections are used to build up a network of direct connections (the people you know) and the connections of the direct connections are the second-degree connections and there connections are the third-degree connections and so on. This is an easy way to meet people through people you know or people they know who would benefit you in a business capacity.
LinkedIn is also used to find employment, new employees or identify business opportunities. Employers can advertise a position they are looking to fill or search for candidates who would be appropriate and potential employees can upload their cv or as they call it resume. Members can follow particular companies and bookmark jobs that appeal to them. Headhunting is common on LinkedIn as when an employer searches for potential employees there is a good chance they work somewhere else and they will then use their ‘connections’ to ascertain if the person is interested in working for them.
People looking for employment can target organisations that they want to work for and use their ‘connections’ to introduce themselves. LinkedIn allows users to research companies and produces statistics about the company through a search function. Research can include how many people they employ, where they operate from and more importantly who their employees are or have been. Members can be identified by a photo or can view photos of others which helps familiarise them with potential employers/associates prior to meeting in the flesh.
LinkedIn Answers is a discussion board which allows members to post questions or respond to questions which all members have access to. The discussion is heavily biased to business questions and allows members to see the identity of the person who placed the post and any responders.
LinkedIn Polls is another feature where users can create polls to question all members of LinkedIn although there does not appear to be a large response.
LinkedIn has a feature that allows members to join groups by educational backgrounds, industry, profession or other relevant group. LinkedIn groups can be created in any area and by anyone.
LinkedIn can be accessed through a mobile phone and updates can be shared to other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. LinkedIn allows for members to post updates very similar to Facebook and they can post links to videos, sites, blogs etc.
LinkedIn allows users to list on their profile page books that they’re reading in association with Amazon and display a blog if they have one.
LinkedIn allows businesses to list products and services on the company profile pages or create an advert at a cost. Companies can also recommend product/services and write reviews.
